Arbitrary Detention and the Rohingya: Will Bangladesh Change Course?
UN Investigation Looms Over Bangladesh
Today, I published an article that highlights an important moment in the fight for Rohingya rights. The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) has formally sent its communication to the Bangladeshi administration, requiring them to respond in due course to allegations of arbitrary detention, torture, and enforced disappearance. This is the first time such a case concerning a Rohingya spokesperson, Dil Mohammed, has reached this level of international scrutiny. His ordeal highlights the systemic injustices faced by the Rohingya and raises pressing questions about how Bangladesh balances national security with its obligations under international law.
This moment also offers a unique opportunity for Bangladesh. With a new administration in office and recent shifts within the country’s security apparatus, the time is ripe for a course correction. By addressing these allegations and demonstrating a commitment to justice, Bangladesh has a chance to turn the page on this troubling chapter. I hope you’ll read the article and join the conversation.
