Breaking News: Submission to UN Calls for Release of Rohingya Leader Dil Mohammed
Rohingya Refugee's Family Takes Fight for Justice to UN Working Group
A major submission has been made to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD), challenging the prolonged detention of Rohingya leader Dil Mohammed, who has been imprisoned in Bangladesh since January 2023. Dil Mohammed, a refugee living in the contested "No Man's Land" between Myanmar and Bangladesh, fled Myanmar in 2017 durng the brutal Myanmar military “clearance operations” on the Rohingya in Arakan.
The case, brought by his family, highlights numerous human rights violations. Dil Mohammed’s lawyer, Haydee Dijkstal, Barrister at 33 Bedford Row Chambers, London, detailed infringements, including his abduction-style arrest, four months of enforced disappearance, solitary confinement, and interrogations without legal representation. The ongoing psychological abuse, coupled with threats against his family, paints a harrowing picture of injustice. Despite the accusations levelled at him, he was denied information about his charges and access to a lawyer for months.
The submission calls on the WGAD to declare his detention arbitrary and demands his immediate release. His son, Mohammed You Ha, made an emotional plea: "I want freedom for my father, and I want these false and baseless charges against him to be dismissed."
This represents a pivotal moment in the fight for justice for the Rohingya in the No Man’s Land encampment, who endured brutal violence at the hands of the Rohingya Solidarity Organisation, with the complicity of Bangladesh authorities.
