Did RAB just capture the mastermind behind Mohibullah's murder?
Puzzling developments in Mohibullah’s Murder Case
On June 10th, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) reported the arrest of five individuals , including Maulvi Akiz, allegedly a top leader of Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), during a raid on Rohingya Camp 4 on June 9th. According to RAB, Maulvi Akiz is also the mastermind behind the murder of Rohingya leader Master Mohibullah, along with other murders.
However, this narrative raises several questions.
Interestingly, RAB had previously captured Noor Kamal, also known as Samiuddin, in October 2023. He was also described as the mastermind of Mohibullah's murder and identified as a top ARSA commander.
Granted, there can be more than one mastermind. But what is puzzling is the fact that Md Shahidul Islam, also known as Maulvi Akiz or Maulvi Oli, was not included in the final charge sheet of 29 people. Yet suddenly he is the mastermind behind Mohibullah’s killing? He may very well be involved in the murders and crimes as listed by RAB, but he is not on the final charge sheet.
This inconsistency raises doubts about the credibility of RAB's claims.
Furthermore, certain ARSA and ex-ARSA individuals, despite being on that final charge list are roaming freely on Bhasan Char!! My investigations exclusively exposed their presence on the island, supported by photographic evidence. So why have they not been arrested? How did they get amnesty without a trial?
Additionally, Abu Anas, another notable figure and previously a top leader of ARSA, was on the final charge sheet of those accused of Mohibullah's murder. Earlier this year, he was involved in fighting against the Arakan Army as part of the Arakan Rohingya Army (ARA) and was forced to retreat to Bangladesh along with junta BGP members. His return to Bangladesh was captured on video, showing him surrendering to the BGB. Why was his surrender not flagged up and hailed as a breakthrough in the Mohibullah case? Indeed, where is he?
Adding to the confusion, the RAB press conference held yesterday did not mention the deaths of three Rohingya individuals in Camp 4 on the same night as their operations. Why not?
In light of these contradictions and omissions, the claims by RAB appear to be less straightforward than presented, warranting further scrutiny and transparency.
This is something that the Bangladeshi press is well equipped to do but they won’t.
The lack of faith in the judicial process is evident even among Mohibullah's family. I asked one of them if they had a list of the accused – a document that is publicly available – they unsurprisingly stated they did not have it. To me, this just shows the skepticism surrounding the process of the case.
