The NUG’s Fight to Shield Aung San Suu Kyi
Myanmar’s NUG and the Rohingya Genocide Arrest Warrants
I’ve just published a new piece on DVB English that looks at the National Unity Government’s (NUG) disturbing effort to whitewash Aung San Suu Kyi’s role in the Rohingya genocide. You can read it here:
In my article, I lay out how the recent arrest warrants issued in Argentina for 25 senior Myanmar officials - yes, including Suu Kyi - have forced the NUG into a corner. Instead of welcoming a thorough investigation, the NUG is sidestepping accountability by pretending that the military alone bears responsibility. They ignore how Suu Kyi’s government blocked investigations, publicly denied atrocities, and defended the Myanmar military on the world stage. Not only is the NUG trying to absolve Aung San Suu Kyi and Htin Kyaw, but it’s also signaling that Rohingya justice is secondary to political convenience.
Meanwhile, and this is really mind boggling, the Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK (BROUK) initially tried to hide Suu Kyi’s inclusion in the warrants despite having campaigned for years to hold her accountable. Why? The sudden silence and evasiveness from both BROUK and the NUG speak volumes about the political calculations at play.
If Myanmar’s opposition refuses to confront its own enabling of genocide, it’s the Rohingya who stand to lose. Again.
And if Rohingya leadership continues to remain silent, it should be understood that silence does not build respect. Without actively fighting for justice, there is little reason for anyone else to champion it. Such silence can be taken as consent, ensuring that the next government of Myanmar never acknowledges Suu Kyi’s role in the genocide.
If silence prevails, the cycle of denial and impunity will only tighten its grip on Myanmar’s future.
