Report: "This Persecution is the Worst There is"
A pioneering event shedding new light on Rohingya treatment in Bangladesh: September 22, 2023
On September 22, 2023, a first-of-its-kind event is on the horizon, poised to redefine discussions around the Rohingya crisis in Bangladesh. Organised by Youth Congress Rohingya (YCR) and hosted by The Fort, this online report launch and panel discussion marks a significant departure from the usual narrative. For too long, the dialogue has been dominated by expressions of gratitude towards Bangladesh, invariably and without exception echoed by both "humanitarian" officials and Rohingya “spokespersons”. Ok…ok…certain Rohingya spokespersons. We've also become overly familiar with a surfeit of photographs featuring diaspora Rohingya figures alongside retired Bangladeshi generals and hobnobbing with Bangladeshi officials. This event, given its content, should be a departure from these norms!
The focus seems to be to dig deeper, going beyond the conventional discussions to highlight issues that are often neglected but have severe, far-reaching implications for the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. Titled “This Persecution is the Worst There is”: Restrictions on Rohingya Freedom of Movement in Bangladesh, the over 80-page report unveils the harsh restrictions enforced by the Bangladesh Government. It also discusses the disquieting levels of violence and extortion by the Armed Police Battalion, spotlighting the dire conditions in the refugee camps.
